Several years ago, when I was a businessman in the computer industry, I attended a conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. While there, I bumped into an acquaintance from Chicago, Illinois (Hi Steve!). He was employed by my previous employer, where he and I had worked together on projects and had become acquainted. We were on friendly terms, but didn’t actually know each other deeply, since he lived in Chicago and I lived near San Jose, California.
The day that we bumped into each other, we spent hanging out together and further developed a connection. By the end of the day I had convinced him to apply for a position with my new firm, in a job where he would be in the department which I managed, but reporting to an area supervisor in Chicago. He applied and was hired. He worked for me along with the others in the Chicago area office until an opportunity arose. We were establishing a new office in Dallas and he was offered the opportunity to relocate there and oversee the office and the customer base in the greater Dallas Area. He accepted and thereby became one of my direct report employees. Over the next few weeks, months and eventually years, he became one of my most trusted employees, as well as, a personal friend. When I traveled to Dallas, I would often stay at his house. When He came to California, he would stay at mine. In fact, because of that “chance” meeting, he became one of the closest and best friends that I have ever had. He was even the Best Man at my wedding.
That chance meeting in Las Vegas was about 20 years ago. My friend still lives in Dallas. He is now happily married to a marvelous lady (Hi Denise!) and has 3 wonderful children (Hi Holly, Blake and Anna!) I still talk with him on the phone and sometimes get to see him when he travels to the Pacific Northwest on business.
What are the odds of us meeting at a mutually distant spot such as Las Vegas? Are the odds different because it happened in Las Vegas, the place where odds are actually bet upon? This conference had hundreds of participants. It was more than chance. I believe it was a Divine Appointment. My life has been a better place because of that meeting 20+ years ago.
I wonder if we’re aware of the opportunities that float by our eyes each and every day. Are we too caught up in the preconceived agenda of our day to take notice? Are we being open to the opportunities that God places before us? Who knows when the next job opportunity, friendship, life lesson, provision or adventure might pass before us? Who knows when God might inspire people to appear at a given spot at a given time to be a blessing to one another?
What about the people that you fellowship with at church? Are they all not inspired by God to be at a certain place, at a certain time, on a Sunday or other meeting time, to be a provision and blessing to one another? Are you taking advantage of that provision? Are you taking the time to be someone else’s provision? Maybe this week, or today, is the time to receive the people in your life as more than ships passing, but as provision coming by the Divine Appointments of God. Blessings!
