Hundreds of years ago, when I was a boy, we often drew pictures of monsters. Frequently these monsters had multiple heads. In the late 50’s and early 60’s TV frequently played old monster movies like Godzilla versus Megallon, King Kong etc.; many of which were made years earlier, but were still very popular at this later time. I can recall seeing two-headed dragons when monster fought monster, as well as, the two headed dragons that were slain by the hero in medieval reference films.
Why was it that two-headed was so imposing and challenging? Well, two heads are better than one, which gave the monster twice the brain capacity; but most of these creatures were not known for their intelligence. Two heads are twice as ferocious when they are the two heads of fire breathing, man-eating dragons, because it creates double the ferocity and attacking power of one head. I also recall monsters with two heads, which disagreed with each other, and thereby represented the internal conflict of good versus evil and the difficulty in balancing the two.
Sometimes I feel like a two headed monster with two opposing thoughts that have equal strength within me. Not only does this expose the age-old struggle between good and evil, inherent in all mankind; but it also exposes the reality that almost all things can be viewed from more than one perspective. This is challenging at times, but it is also evidence of higher level thought.
The point is that this “higher level” of thought is always available to us. When we stand in the moment and see the moment from only one perspective, we are not allowing the fullness of our capabilities and faculties to operate. Because we have “always” or “usually” thought about something or done something a certain way, does not mean that an alternative thought or approach is invalid. Sometimes a situation “feels” the same as another, but in reality it is quite different and therefore offers an opportunity for a new and/or different approach.
Mankind is quick to try and reason things into manageable formulas. The down side of this comes when we lock ourselves into canned responses for things, which can create missed opportunities. What if we took a deep breath and searched through the next situation to find out what the alternative perspectives on this situation might be? It might be exciting to stop and think about the new things that could be observed or learned from this experience. It’s like trying to think of the thought that the other head might have.
Maybe it would be beneficial to think or look at this other thought, even if it’s just to recognize that it is there; that it is an option. It doesn’t mean you have to choose it. It only means that you can allow yourself to have bigger, wider thoughts about things. Maybe you see your life in this limited, one dimensional way. Maybe your life seems like it isn’t enough, or you haven’t gotten where you thought you’d be. But maybe that’s because you’ve only allowed yourself to look at your life from one perspective or standard of measurement. Perhaps the original standard you used to set the unmet goals of your life were standards that you no longer accept today; but you haven’t adjusted your goals to the new standards. If so, your disappointment about your progress toward your goals may need to be viewed from a new perspective. This may change the view of your current progress. It may even change your goals in order to bring them into alignment with your newer, more matured perspective. I urge you to look again. You may not be as stuck as you thought. Blessings!
