“Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.” goes the words of that old Hymn. “Blessed Assurance,” the mere statement of those two words actually brings me peace and assurance that the Lord cares for me and will see me through the challenges and trials of this life. I am given reassurance every time that I speak or hear those words.
It’s interesting to me that we live in a time where insurance seems to be the source of much of our assurance. We feel reassured by having insurance for our vehicles our home and our health. If we meet any challenges in the deterioration of our health or the conditions of our homes or vehicles from accidents or “Acts of God,” we are insured.
Lately, there has been much discussion about socialized health care in America through the provision of health insurance for everyone. Incredibly, the state of Massachusetts has recently passed a “mandatory health insurance” law for all residents of Massachusetts, much like the mandatory automobile insurance that we are forced to carry in most states these days. The state says that they assist those who need assistance to carry this type of insurance, but those whom the state deems capable of affording health care insurance will be required to purchase it or pay stiff financial penalties through substantial annual tax penalties and/or wage garnishments.
Here is a case where citizens are being forced to have the assurance of insurance. Is that actually reassuring? I’m not here to talk politics with you today. We’ll leave that to our politicians, who certainly have no problem debating, just problems deciding and legislating. What I am here to discuss is whether or not our Savior is truly our assurance.
It becomes ever increasingly easy these days to shift our focus to the worldly provision of insurance as our source of comfort. If it becomes our source of comfort, we lose touch with the reality that God is the only real source of anything including our help and our comfort. Psalm 121 – I will lift up my eyes to the hills-From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.
If you have health insurance to bring you assurance, praise the Lord. If you don’t, praise the Lord. Either way, and in all things, “Praise the Lord,” for He is our help and our provider and our shield. Our salvation is more than our “insurance” to avoid hell’s fire. It is moreover our “assurance” that we are indeed the children of God whom He will care for and love eternally.
Blessings!
