I came home the other day to find a small pamphlet tucked into my door. I unfolded it and read the bold print title. It read: “HOW TO SURVIVE THE END OF THE WORLD”
I couldn’t read past that title. It just kept nagging at me. I pondered it for a few minutes, wondering exactly what the end of the world is. Then, it came to me. If the world ends, then no one could survive. I reasoned that if the world was in a condition to still sustain life, then the end of the world had not truly occurred. In other words, the idea of surviving the end of the world would be an unachievable thing! I looked at the source of this pamphlet and saw that it had been published by a group who rejects Christ as God. The pamphlet was actually talking about the idea that the world was going to end and that certain people would survive, if they had the correct theology. So if the world ends I can survive and live on in the world which ended? I reiterate that a world which ends with survivors is not a world which ended.
I, for one, am happy that the Bible teaches that this earth will pass away and there will be a new Heaven and a new Earth.
We are indeed asked by God to tend the garden. I believe in being a good steward of whatever God gives us, including the Earth. But the earth will, alas, come to an end, regardless of our stewardship. We cannot, in the end, “Save the Planet”, because it was never the plan to save the planet, but rather to save its inhabitants. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God’s gift is eternal life, not eternal earth.
I realized that in some way, perhaps this means our survival as this world passes away, but we will not survive in this world, for we will be changed in the wink of an eye and the dead in Christ will rise and as Revelation 21 tells us: Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”
So, yes, be a good steward of the Earth, but be a better steward of life, because it is life which continues to allow us to dwell together in eternity. Blessings!
