wife and I were talking the other day and she mentioned how water never really goes away, it just changes form. It is a liquid, it can evaporate into a gas and it can freeze into a solid. I’ve been thinking about that conversation since then and realized some interesting (at least to me) additional correlations about this life giving molecule.
Water, as we all learned in school, is made up of two elements: Hydrogen and Oxygen. Without both of them, it is not water. It reminds me of our life. We are who we are and seemingly whole, but at the same time we often feel like something is missing, like we’re somehow incomplete. What we need, of course, is God to complete us. When we accept God as our Lord and Savior, we join our life to His. We become inseparable from Him, even though our life changes forms many times throughout the years.
We can also see that our life in Him can go through different forms, often in cycles. Just as water can be gas, liquid or solid, we go through stages or phases of our faith. We can be like the solid ice when our faith is so strong, so dense and solid that we can easily stand upon it. It feels so strong that nothing could apparently shake it or dissolve it. There are other times when our faith takes on another form. It is as if it were liquid. We don’t necessarily feel as if we can stand on it, but we can feel it flowing through us. We may be somewhat uncertain what form it should take, but we are willing to let it flow and seek its own level.
Then there are those times when our faith is more like a gas. It doesn’t seem real. It is light and airy and without any true form. We know that it exists, but we’re not quite sure where it is or how to contain it or direct it.
A life of faith, our life with God, is just as permanent as that bond with Hydrogen and Oxygen. It may change forms several times over the course of a lifetime, but that doesn’t mean that it has gone away. Even when it evaporates, it eventually finds more molecules of its kind and begins to group together with them. Eventually that grouping together causes them to become denser and denser until they start to take form, as drops of water. That water runs together with other drops and becomes a stream that flows through life together. When the world turns cold, they huddle together even closer and become one solid unit as ice. When things warm back up they may separate slightly to allow one another to flow more freely, but they still stay connected. So, stay connected, it helps faith become dense enough to stand on. Blessings!
