This is the Season when we start to hear a lot about Peace on Earth. We all love the sound of it and we all agree to the concept. This concept, however, is usually interpreted in a personal way. We may look at peace on earth as an earth absent of war. I’m not sure, but my guess is that having no one at war anywhere on the earth at this time of year has probably never actually happened. We may feel that this peace on earth deal is about being kind to each other or giving more to help those in need. This does happen more at this time of year and probably does contribute to peace on earth. We also may look at this concept and decide to be more patient and less angry. This also helps create peace on the earth.
This word peace is from the Hebrew Shalom. It is about fullness, completeness and wholeness. In this wholeness there is peace. It is an inner peace. That inner peace is something that we carry. If we carry that inner peace and bring it to bear in our dealings with others, we, in effect, carry that Shalom into the world.
The point is this: We often look at peace on earth as something that we receive or that the world receives, at this time of year. The reality may be a little different. The reality looks more like peace on earth being something that we need to pour out into the world. It is not a gift to merely receive, but a gift to give. If we take the attitude of waiting to receive this Shalom/Peace, we may indeed receive it at times, but if we use this time to look for opportunities to give it, we end up actually increasing the amount of peace on earth by adding to it.
Peace on earth, goodwill toward men. We hear about it in the Bible concerning the coming of the birth of our Savior. That goodwill was to come in the form of that Savior. Peace and goodwill; a gift, given to mankind.
If we are to experience peace on earth and goodwill towards men, it will be through living it, not just waiting for it to happen and complaining when we’re not seeing it.
If your world lacks peace and goodwill, maybe it’s time to step up your contribution of it to the world. Then we can keep giving the gift of Christ to the world and thereby bring forth peace on earth and goodwill towards men.
